Basic Personality: Hali is a difficult person to understand, and even more difficult to get close to. When you first meet her, she can be abrasive, sarcastic, and downright unkind. She has a very superior, worldly attitude, and gives the impression that she knows a lot more about the way the world works than an eighteen year-old should. She seems hard as nails and like nothing you say will make her do more than smirk, but of course, there is depth to her.
Hali is still an eighteen year-old girl, and despite acting so tough all the time, she is easily and deeply hurt by callous words. It's hard to tell, because she just acts more annoyed, but underneath it all, she is honestly a bit vulnerable and in need of someone to just accept her as she is. She wouldn't admit it, though; she has far too much pride and more than a little bit of spunk that prevents her from letting people see her softer side.
Background: When Hali arrived in Neisenma, unusual circumstances granted her a home with a family very shortly after she stepped off the train. A couple, missing their current son, were searching for him when they came across Hali, who looked remarkably like him, only female. The mother was slightly deranged and mistook Hali for their son, and so the father took her aside and offered her a home, financial support, and a family until they found their son. With no viable way to make her own income, she agreed -- even though the one condition was that she dress, act, and respond to daily life as a male.
At home, her name is Terry, and she is treated like their son. When she attended school, she wore male uniforms but did not pretend to be a boy; her father handled all of the parent-teacher conferences and the like. While attending, she fell hard for one of her teachers, but when she confessed to him, he told her that he simply saw her as a little sister and could never look at her as a woman. From that point, Hali became bitter toward him, but not all men, though her personality took on a rougher edge from then on. In a fit of immaturity, she vowed to break his heart in the same fashion -- callous and abrupt -- but has yet to do so.
Shortly before graduating, a talent scout snapped a photo of her and, after some wheedling and a lot of persuasion on his part, Hali agreed to model. She has been doing so for just a few months, and it looks like her pictures are going to start appearing in magazines and on billboards, which will make it difficult for her to walk around unnoticed.
Unless, of course, she takes on the persona of Terry while she walks the streets, too.
